The Shocking Reality of Plastic Pollution
The numbers are staggering, and they hit hard:
- 8.3 billion tons of plastic have been produced since 1950—enough to cover every inch of the Earth’s surface.
- 8 million tons of plastic waste flood our oceans every year, threatening marine life and ecosystems.
- 500 years is how long it takes for a single plastic bottle to biodegrade after being discarded.
- Only 9% of all plastic ever made is recycled, leaving the rest to pile up in landfills or pollute our environment.
The truth is
Plastic pollution is growing at an alarming rate and harming our environment dramatically.
By one estimate, every year millions of discarded bottles end up either in the ocean or in a landfill. As you may notice, nowadays it's not uncommon to see some marine organisms found dead with large amounts of plastic in their stomachs. What's worse, people who regularly eat seafood ingest up to 11,000 tiny pieces of plastic each year, according to a recent study conducted by Ghent University in Belgium.
What did we do?
We recycle these discarded plastic bottles and turn them into trendy umbrellas.
I know it sounds crazy when you first think about it. To put it simply, we just simply change the raw material, instead of using oil to create polyester, we're using a waste that we have excess of. After sorting, sterilizing, melting and crafting, we create a new material that is not only more sustainable, but one that is also soft, durable, and eco-friendly.
